Our History
The Mennonite Church is a Christian denomination which traces its roots back to the Protestant Reformation in 16th Century Europe. As part of the Radical Reformation, Anabaptists (re-baptizers) refused to recognize a church and governmental system that forced people into a particular state religion. “True faith,” they said, “is voluntary.” Because they were not recognized as part of the state churches (Catholic, Lutheran, or Reformed), Mennonites were considered a threat to the state and were severely persecuted for the first several generations.
After becoming an Anabaptist in the 16th century, a Dutch priest named Menno Simons traveled extensively helping to organize, consolidate, and lead the scattered groups of reformers. His name soon became associated with this emerging movement. Because of his significant contribution to the development of this group of radical reformers, the Mennonite Church is named after Simons.
Bergthal Mennonite Church was founded in 1901 by Mennonites who moved to the area from Ontario and Manitoba. Our congregation now consists of persons of all ages, with a large segment of very active retirees! It is truly an intergenerational family from a variety of backgrounds, representing many diverse vocations.
As the church, we seek to witness to the name of Jesus Christ through our worship, service, and proclamation of the Gospel both across the street and around the world.
Financial support of the church and its programs is through responsible freewill offerings.
